A GLOW UP FROM WITHIN? GUT HEALTH MATTERS

According to a recent review, a healthy gut microbiome might be a key factor in maintaining healthy skin.
The gut microbiome is the environment in the intestinal tract that helps to break down food into nutrients the body can absorb. A healthy gut microbiome is made up of a diverse and balanced group of microorganisms, like bacteria and fungi. A healthy gut microbiome means a well-developed intestinal lining that protects you inside and out.
Evidence suggests that plant-based diets promote a biodiverse environment – variations of vegetarian and Mediterranean diets have been studied over the years. High fiber, low glycemic, and low saturated fat dietary prescriptions increase the prevalence of beneficial bacteria and the production of other important microbes.
Data is still unclear on some foods like eggs and chicken, but there is consensus that regular dairy consumption has a high correlation to instances of acne and other inflammatory skin conditions.
For a healthier gut, and healthier skin, look to add food high in fiber, antioxidants, and phytonutrients to your diet.
Some of these foods include:
- Vegetables
- Fruits, berries
- Legumes, nuts, seeds
- Avocado
- Whole grains
The typical Western diet includes foods high in saturated fats and increased glycemic indices which can throw off the gut microbiome.
Avoid the following food to avoid imbalance and inflammation:
- Dairy products, including low and whole-fat milk
- Eggs
- Red meat
- Processed foods
This doesn’t have to be all or nothing – incorporating more plant-based foods can help!
